The Importance of Layering Physical Security with Other Security
There is no one security tool that will ensure that your business does not get robbed, vandalized or damaged. In fact, there is not combination of tools that make it 100% impossible to break into any property. However, by layering different types of security tools and utilizing these tools effectively, you can significantly decrease the likelihood of a crime taking place on your property.
When it comes to protecting your business, one of the goals is to make it as difficult as possible for a criminal to break into a property undetected. Various security tools can be used to do this.
For example, an alarm system is designed to make an audible sound and/or contact a central alarm station when a crime takes place. The goal of this is to attract attention to the crime, reducing the chances of a criminal escaping.
Security cameras are also used to reduce crime. The goal of these systems is to gather details about the criminals and their crimes.
With both alarm systems and security cameras, the hope is that criminals will avoid attempting a break-in because they are worried that they will be caught in the act or identified after the fact. However, there are holes in both of these types of security.
An alarm system is only truly effective if the alarm is responded to quickly enough for the criminal to be stopped. However, many crimes take only minutes to commit. Some take just a few seconds. Unfortunately, police or security guards cannot respond quickly enough to catch criminals in these crimes.
With security cameras, many criminals now work to disable cameras or cover their faces to ensure that they will not be identifiable in the resulting security footage.
That is not to say that these tools are not effective. They are effective at deterring and preventing crime. However, they are not as effective on their own as they are if they are combined with physical security tools such as security gates.
How Physical Security Works with your Security System
Physical security tools do exactly what it sounds like they do: They physically prevent access to a property. When you install security gates on a property, you make it significantly more difficult to break into that property. For example, if you have window security gates installed, you are making it much less likely that a criminal will be able to smash the window of your store or other business in order to commit a crime.
Physical security tools make other forms of security more effective as well. Consider a situation where a store has security gates installed. The time it takes to break into the store will be much longer thanks to the gates. That means there is more time for authorities to respond to the signal from an alarm system. It also means that there are more opportunities for video surveillance cameras to capture footage of the crime in progress.
There is no form of security that is 100% effective at all times. However, by layering different types of security tools together and by effectively utilizing physical security tools, you are making your property much more difficult to successfully break into. This decreases the likelihood of a crime taking place at your property since criminals may not deem it worth the effort and the risk to do so.
